Hematology
Hematology is the study of blood, the blood-forming organs, and blood diseases that affect the production of blood and its components. Hematology is a subspecialty of internal medicine that is separate from but does overlap with medical oncology. At Michigan Hematology Oncology, we treat patients with a wide variety of blood disorders including anemias, increases and decreases in cell counts, hematological malignancies such as lymphoma and leukemias, and coagulopathies among others. Our treatment plans may include chemotherapy, various pharmacological therapies, nutritional counseling, anticoagulation therapy, transfusions, radiation and bone marrow transplants. Many times, a combination of these treatment therapies are used.

"BLOODLESS MEDICINE" |
At Michigan Hematology Oncology, we welcome and support our patients who, for personal or religious reasons may prefer medical treatment without the use of blood or blood products. Our physicians aggressively screen for anemia, and treat it with methods such as intravenous iron, B12, folate and albumin-free erythropoietin. We also have years of experience working closely with surgeons and perfusionists who also understand and support these principles. As a team, we coordinate efforts to optimize your chances for a successful surgery that respects your wishes.

CANCER GENETIC COUNSELING, TESTING & MANAGEMENT |
All cancer is genetic, but not all cancer is inherited. Cancer genetic counseling is recommended when there is a strong enough personal and/or family history to justify this testing. The physicians at Michigan Hematology Oncology are experienced in risk assessment for hereditary cancer syndromes, and will recommend cancer genetic counseling and testing if indicated. In the privacy of our office you may be counseled about the process of inheritance, the pros and cons of testing, and possible test results. If indicated, informed consent will be obtained and cancer genetic testing will be completed. Once received, the test results will be disclosed to you, and appropriate medical management strategies will be reviewed. |
